A dead end: Assessment without enablement

Hi Reader,

Are you treating ESG and sustainability in your supply chain as a scorecard… or a stepping stone?

I'm finding that more procurement, sustainability, and transformation leaders are recognising that ESG assessments alone aren’t moving the needle. We gather the data, flag the risks, maybe even knock a few suppliers off the list - but has anything really changed?

Here’s the question I keep coming back to: what if supplier ESG wasn’t just about assessment, but about enablement?

Instead of just asking suppliers to respond to another disclosure or audit, what if we used that moment to offer support - practical, targeted, and growth-oriented? That’s where things start to shift. We’ve seen the impact when businesses integrate ESG uplift into their Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) programmes: sustainability stops being a compliance requirement and becomes a capability accelerator.

Some of our most progressive clients are starting to embed ESG into their ESD budgets - funding sustainability snapshots, coaching suppliers on sustainability-linked opportunities, helping them become finance-ready. It’s a great option: one that not only builds stronger supply chains, but also ticks inclusive procurement (and B-BBEE in South Africa) boxes and creates stories worth sharing in integrated reports.

This kind of enablement doesn’t have to be large-scale or high-cost. In fact, it works best when it starts with just a few key suppliers - those with the potential to grow, but who need a hand getting ESG-ready. The payoff? A more resilient, investable, and aligned value chain.

New Offering: ESG Enablement Toolkit – Now in Beta

We’re launching a new offering designed to help businesses operationalise this thinking: the Unifi ESD ESG Toolkit. It combines rapid ESG diagnostics with credential development for your selected ESD suppliers, and plugs into both your sustainability and B-BBEE goals.

We’re opening up a waitlist for our first cohort of participating businesses. If you’re exploring ways to shift from ESG assessment to uplift and enablement in your value chain, reply to this email and we’ll set up a time to talk through the model.

Tip of the Month

Try asking your top suppliers: “What would you need from us to improve your ESG credentials?” Their answers might surprise you - and spark your next development initiative.

How are you thinking about ESG uplift in your supply chain? I’d love to hear what’s working, what’s tricky, and where the gaps are.

Let me know what you think,

Hi Reader, I was looking at some of the data we've compiled in the JSE ESG dataset, which reveals an interesting dynamic of how the same data point can tell two different stories. But first, in case you missed it, a couple of weeks ago we launched an African-centric full-coverage ESG dataset with close to 25,000 disclosures, three years of history and a benchmark layer with the JSE, available now on the JSE Market Data MarketPlace. And we have a webinar coming up next week to showcase the...

Hi Reader, I’m proud to let you know of a first for us at Unifi, and as far as we can tell, a first for South Africa: we have partnered with the Johannesburg Stock Exchange on South Africa’s locally built and relevant ESG dataset, which is now live on the JSE Market Data MarketPlace. The JSE Unifi ESG product suite is a full coverage dataset across the JSE universe (240+ listed companies) with three years of history, which includes nearly 25,000 disclosures spanning about 60 metrics in the...

Hi Reader, I'm a little embarrassed. For many of you this is the first time a newsletter has arrived from me in close to a year. I've broken all the rules of what the content gurus say about consistency, and I'll unashamedly put the blame at the door of busy-ness. It's been a wild 2026 so far and we've been building some really interesting stuff with some even-more-interesting clients and partners. So I'll be sharing some fortnightly reflections on those builds, with some information about...
