Hi Reader,
It’s tempting to frame ESG and sustainability as an external pressure -something driven by customers, regulators, or investors. But what if the more powerful entry point is internal? What if ESG maturity begins not with the outside-in, but with the simple lens of business continuity?
I was reminded of this in a recent conversation with a client (hat tip to them) who framed their ESG journey around operational resilience rather than compliance. Their starting point wasn’t reporting frameworks or scorecards; it was very practical questions: How secure is our water supply? How reliable is our energy mix? What does continuity look like for our logistics if fuel costs spike? These are the kinds of questions that get executives leaning in - not because of regulatory tick-boxing, but because continuity is existential.
In South Africa, where I'm based, many businesses have already had to tackle energy resilience, often through renewables or backup systems. That in itself has a double benefit: protecting operations while reducing emissions and strengthening the story they can tell their customers. The same can be said for water stewardship, fleet efficiency, or packaging innovation. Each of these is a lever that begins as a continuity measure and matures into an ESG credential.
This is an “inside-out” approach. It resonates with peers and boards who might be sceptical of ESG as a distraction or a cost. The very same customer I mentioned above quipped that ESG is seen as "BS, and expensive BS at that!" by the Execs. When it’s framed as continuity though - keeping the business operational, future-proofing against shocks - it shifts from being an external imposition to a strategic imperative. And in the process, it creates measurable sustainability gains that stakeholders value.
This is exactly the kind of angle we surface in our when we have the opportunity to run an ESG Credentials Diagnostic at clients. We start with the data and practices already embedded in your business, map where continuity and cost-saving overlaps exist, and then credentialise these for ESG maturity. From energy to fleet to logistics to packaging, there are often untapped areas that both protect the business and enhance its credentials.
So perhaps the seed of the conversation in your business isn’t “how do we keep up with ESG reporting requirements?” but rather “how do we make sure we’re resilient?” That seed could unlock both commercial value and stakeholder confidence.
Have you found ways to frame ESG in terms of business continuity in your organisation? What’s worked to open up that conversation with your executive team?
